Oct 19 - 24

Monday - I practiced Waltz for almost an hour and then went for my own lesson and it was so fun, yay, I like violin. During the next month, I'm going to work on setting the bow on Hunters Chorus, on doing "sticky slurs" on Gavotte and Hunter's Chorus, and work on vibrato on the Minuets, Chorus, and Waltz. Also, getting deeper into the string but while using the whole bow, go deep from the elbow but at the same time being aware that the shoulder, elbow, and wrist all work together. Also going to work on some Schradeick techniques on A string -

It was really fun, I liked having a whole hour to go deep playing, deeper than I usually had with the 5 min jump in lessons I had before. I playing violin!

Monday - Lesson today over zoom cause the kids have all been sick with sore throats, and we went and got Wes tested for covid since he was the worst of the kids and had a low fever of 100.0. So lesson was fine, the girls didn't practice or play any hymns Fri, Sat or Sun, so they were a little rusty. We practiced today though - just review of their pieces to pass of - Perpetual motion for Natalie and Minuet 2 for Sophi. They did good, I did a little bit of Long Long ago from book 2, going to work on getting the bowing correct this week

Tuesday, June 23, 2020

Jun 22 - 27

Monday - lots of Musette and review before lessons today - it's been 3 weeks since our last lesson so I had both N and S have 30 min lessons and then I had a quick check in at the end and played Mussette, she said it was great and all the notes were right, no tricks or secrets to improving the tone other than practice, so that is good! I had the bowing all down and didn't mess up. We did America the beautiful and some fiddle tunes too which was fun (Boil 'em cabbage boys)
My notes from the lessons - I took lots of notes cause Natalie and Sophi both act during their lessons the same way that they act when I try to get them to practice. But I feel so frustrated and Amy handles it like a pro (she is a pro) so I took copious notes so that I can apply them as we practice. :
NATALIE
Playing position - feet, violin up
A scale - Legatto
Remember in lessons we need to take turns
Wait for the instructions
Do you start up or down bow?
Use more of your bow
What did yo notice?
Pick another review piece (let them choose)
What would happen if you used more bow in lightly row
Watch your bow
Keep your eyes on your bow
Get a dice - each side with a different way to play - eyes closed, one foot, kneeling, laying
Allegro - steady
I'm leading
Follow the leader for temp "I'm starting, 123 ready go"
Notice some bows are choppy, some are smooth, some are extra silky smooth
Every note in it's place
Perpetual Motion - 3 parts, practice one part each week
Watch the fingers each on its place
SOPHI
Open straight wrist
Play scale together, me to keep tempo on open A
Eyes on fingers, esp since it is a new instrument
Minuet 2 All C natural
My turn your turn
Watch my fingers and bow
I know you could keep playing and/or sing it, but stop on D#
We have a purpose, to have D# find it's spot
We didn't do it any time yet cause it wasn't in tune
They have to be exactly right/in tune
Part of what we're practicing is stopping at the end of the practice spot or I can't count it
(Amy got her bead counter from "The Practice Shoppe" Leslie Thackery - going to order one)
Tuesday - lots of Musette, played it for my mom and niece Aurora, worked a little on Gavotte, review of all songs, minuets, chorus
Wednesday - I learned Boil 'em cabbage down, it is really fun! I also started Turkey in the Straw. I can do it but much slower than the youtube video I watched (wow!)
Thursday - This morning I did more Boil 'em Cabbage and Turkey in the Straw, then I also learned Old Joe Clark and Skinny Rat Jig, so fun! Sophi came in and started to clog dance as I played. Hyrum begged for mercy cause I just played the same 4 notes for 5 minutes and he couldn't hear the pro fiddler in the video over me. Also started Skittles at Buckley Bay
Friday - Suzuki review with S and N, and reviewed all the new fiddle songs from yesterday
Saturday - Boil em cabbage while the little kids danced and older kids begged me to stop. Ethan told me today that he's surprised with how much I've improved. ... but it was possible because I started so low

We didn't have lessons this Monday cause we're skipping a few weeks since Corey is looking for work. Our next lesson will be May 3, so I'm trying really hard to make sure the girls practiced and are progressing so we have good things to show Amy when we have our next lesson. I did G scale and tonalization while playing along to the Piano Guys (Fight Song and Sky Full of Stars) and lots of review with the girls.

Sophi has almost got Etude down! I'm excited for her to start the Minuets.

Brief History of My Violin Efforts

So, I'm starting another online log for myself to keep track of my violin practicing and stuff.

Quick history - my daughter Sophi started violin in August 2018 at my husbands request. I was approaching the 3rd trimester of pregnancy with our 12th child, so I was not about to take on more things to do. So I told him that was fine, but he had to be the one making it happen - aka the one taking her to lessons and helping her practice. Cause I didn't have energy for it now and wouldn't have the time after the baby was born. Plus I don't know anything about violin. Corey picked her up dutifully from school each Thursday and then outsourced the teaching to Melodie, my then senior in high school. Mel would meet them at the teacher's house and would sit in the lessons with Sophi so that she could help her. Summer of 2019, Mel was getting ready to leave for college and it dawned on me that she wouldn't be around to help Sophi. Corey also wanted Natalie to start lessons. My baby was now 6 months old, so I'm still nursing him but we're getting a handle on juggling life, so I felt I could take this over now. I took it upon myself to prep to be their new parental instructor. But since I had zero knowledge of violin, I thought I better learn a little bit. On a whim I looked up used violins on the classifieds, saw one that was less than $100, and so I got it so I could start to learn a little. That one wasn't great, so I got a few more and I really enjoyed fiddling around with it! And that's how and why I started to learn violin as a 43 year old.

I caught up to my 2nd grader pretty quickly in the Suzuki book and our violin teacher says that I'm her best student at practicing, yay for me! We have lessons on Mondays, and after Sophi and Natalie get their instruction, I jump in for a quick 10 minute lesson.

I played in the group Christmas recital with my girls on 19 Dec 2019.

The web address of this blog is amaviolinist - which wasn't my first choice but it was available. I was going for a "Mom violinist" or "Too old to begin practicing violin"-ish kinda name. The idea behind AMA cause that is an acronym that describes me, or did during my last pregnancy, cause AMA stands for Advanced Maternal Age. So I'm an Advanced Maternal Age violinist. It kinda sounds like "I'm a violinist", it's also kinda fun, cause it's almost like "I love" in spanish - amo. I don't know if it will lead to anything amazing, but I like it and it brings me joy, I think it will bring me more joy the more I practice and the better I get.
